Aquino: New Hamilton-class cutter to bear name of World War II hero

A SECOND warship that will be acquired from the United States will be named after World War II naval hero Commodore Ramon A. Alcaraz, President Benigno S. C. Aquino III said yesterday.

In a speech during the 70th commemoration of the Fall of Corregidor off Bataan province, Mr. Aquino said the best tribute that the country can offer fallen heroes like Mr. Alcaraz is to match their dedication by building a credible national defense.
“We consider it our duty to ensure that their strength of spirit will be matched by boats, by weapons, and by sufficient training. This is the truest tribute we can offer to those who have laid down their lives: a nation capable of protecting itself; a nation that can say no sacrifice will be wasted,” said Mr. Aquino, at the Pacific War Memorial at Corregidor Island, in Cavite province.
The second Hamilton-class Cutter from the US is scheduled to arrive within the month. It will bear the name of Mr. Alcaraz, who commanded one of the country’s three motor torpedo boats, known as Q-boats, during World War II.
Q-112 Abra, manned by Mr. Alcaraz and his crew, took down three of the nine Japanese “Zero” fighters before being captured, said Mr. Aquino.
In captivity, Mr. Alcaraz became head of the prisoner of war camp in Malolos, in Bulacan province to take care of his fellow inmates, he added.
“Commodore Alcaraz was only one among many skilled men in uniform who have served our country. Many continue to follow in his footsteps; and we are determined to reward their patriotism with equal dedication. For certain, many more Commodore Alcarazes will rise from the ranks of our military,” said Mr. Aquino.
Aside from the second Hamilton-class cutter, Mr. Aquino had earlier announced that four more combat utility choppers will arrive in November. The first cutter was named BRP Gregorio del Pilar.
Mr. Aquino earlier noted that over 100 defense articles will be acquired over the next five years. -- J. P. D. Poblete
